Why the United States Needs Structured Truck-Wash Education

Yet the wash capacity that keeps those fleets clean is thin, unevenly distributed, and served by no dedicated educational institution. Truck Wash University exists to close that gap with structured, connected education for everyone who builds, runs, or services a commercial truck wash.

The truck population keeps growing
Commercial trucking is not a niche. The Federal Highway Administration counted 14.89 million registered single-unit and combination trucks in its 2023 Highway Statistics series, about one in twenty of all motor vehicles on American roads. Those trucks moved 11.27 billion tons of freight in 2024, which is more than 72 percent of everything shipped domestically by weight. The American Trucking Associations projects total truck tonnage to reach nearly 14 billion tons by 2035, so the vehicle population this industry serves is set to grow for at least the next decade.
Every one of those trucks operates outdoors, in weather, on salted winter roads and dusty summer corridors. Fleets wash them for reasons that go beyond appearance: corrosion protection, safety inspections that require visible components, food-transport sanitation rules, driver retention, and the brand a company rolls down the highway. A growing truck population means growing, recurring, non-optional demand for washing.
Wash capacity has not kept up
Here is the striking part: there is no authoritative modern census of American truck washes. The most recent detailed federal tally, drawn from 2017 Economic Census data, counted roughly 1,400 establishments whose primary business was washing and cleaning heavy trucks and buses. Even allowing for truck-stop wash bays, fleet in-house facilities, and mobile operators the census categories miss, the dedicated capacity is small against a truck population approaching 15 million. As a rough scale check, dividing those two public figures works out to roughly ten thousand registered trucks for every dedicated wash establishment counted.
That imbalance is not spread evenly. Some freight corridors are well served while others run for long stretches with no professional wash at all, a pattern the industry calls a truck wash desert. Establishing how many washes a given corridor actually needs takes traffic counts, fleet density, and existing-capacity mapping, which is exactly the demand-gap methodology taught in site selection and applied in our market analyses. Training today is fragmented
Ask how someone learns to run or service a truck wash today and the answer is piecemeal. Equipment manufacturers certify technicians on their own product lines, which is valuable but stops at the brand boundary. Adjacent trade groups teach pressure-washing technique and safety. Large fleets train in-house and keep what they learn. Operator know-how passes person to person, and much of the industry’s practical knowledge is not written down anywhere a newcomer can find it.
What this industry has lacked is what most established trades take for granted: a connected curriculum that treats the wash as one system, from site feasibility and construction through equipment, chemistry, water treatment, operations, maintenance, and compliance. That is the gap Truck Wash University is being built to fill, through six connected Colleges, hands-on technical training, and role-specific divisions for developers, fleets, and investors.
